Israel Agrees to Trump's Ceasefire Suggestion Amidst Six Additional Starvation Deaths in Gaza
In the past few weeks, the Gaza Strip has been grappling with a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions. Since October 7, a staggering 393 lives have been lost due to causes related to hunger and malnutrition, with 140 of these being children.
The United Nations (UN) has confirmed the existence of famine in the northern governate of Gaza as early as August, and the situation has only worsened since then. The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, issued a warning that if supply restrictions continue, famine could spread to the governates of Deir el Balah and Khan Yunis by the end of September. Six more people have died of hunger in the Palestinian enclave just recently.
The crisis in Gaza is deeply intertwined with the ongoing conflict between Israel and the territory. More than half of the victims in the recent Israeli attacks have been killed in the north of the enclave, where Gaza City is located. In addition, Israeli attacks since the start of the war have claimed more than 64,300 Gazan lives, the majority of whom are civilians.
Amidst the turmoil, efforts have been made to negotiate a ceasefire. In August, former U.S. President Donald Trump encouraged Qatar to act as a mediator between Israel and Hamas. His administration engaged in talks involving Qatari and Israeli officials to seek a resolution and restart negotiations.
Recently, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced the acceptance of a U.S.-proposed ceasefire in Gaza. The latest proposal for a ceasefire includes the exchange of all 48 remaining hostages for Palestinian prisoners. Hamas, too, has expressed readiness to negotiate an agreement that would release all hostages if Israel ends its offensive.
However, the pursuit of peace has been marred by continued violence. In the last few hours alone, at least 48 people have died in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli attacks. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued an ultimatum to Hamas, stating that if they do not release all hostages and disarm, he would destroy Gaza and annihilate them.
Trump also warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting the ceasefire, issuing a final warning. Despite these warnings, Israeli forces have continued to bomb tall buildings in Gaza City and order new displacements.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with no end to the crisis in sight. The international community must continue to press for a peaceful resolution and work towards alleviating the humanitarian crisis facing the people of Gaza.
