Israel launches assault on Hamas administrative center in Qatar
In a shocking turn of events, the Israeli military conducted a military strike against the political leadership of Hamas in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday. The attack, named "Summit of Fire", is sensitive because Qatar often acts as a mediator in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
The Israeli army justified the attack by saying that the members of the Hamas leadership are directly responsible for the massacres of October 7, 2023, a claim that has been met with international condemnation.
The Qatari government strongly condemned the attack, calling it a "blatant violation of all international laws and norms." The attack targeted a meeting attended by Hamas leader Khalil al-Haya, Khaled Mashal, and Saha Djabarin, among other leading figures of the terrorist organization.
Initial reports suggest that Hamas leader Khalil al-Haya was killed in the attack, although this has not been officially confirmed. It is worth noting that since October 7, Israel has already killed numerous Hamas operatives, including Yahya Sinwar, Hamas chief in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed Deif, Hamas military chief, and Ismail Haniyeh, political chief of the terrorist organization. Haniyeh was killed in an attack in the Iranian capital Tehran.
The Israeli army's actions have been defended by Army Chief Eyal Zamir who stated in August that "Our actions are not yet complete. The majority of the remaining Hamas leadership is abroad, and we will reach them too."
On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said his country had accepted a US proposal for a ceasefire. However, the attack in Doha has raised questions about Israel's commitment to peace and its willingness to engage in diplomatic solutions.
The attack in Doha is particularly sensitive because Qatar often acts as a mediator in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Along with Qatar, Turkey is also considered a base for the Hamas leadership. However, the Turkish government’s role in the October 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict was not explicitly detailed in the search results.
The events in Doha follow a violent week in Jerusalem, where on Monday, two Palestinians shot and killed six people at a bus stop. The Israeli military's actions against Hamas leadership have been met with widespread condemnation, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the ongoing conflict in the region.
