Israel-Palestine conflict: Al Jazeera Accuses Israel of War Crimes
In the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the targeting of journalists has reached unprecedented levels, resulting in the deadliest period for media professionals in modern history.
The systematic killing of journalists demands a robust response from the international community and all relevant governments. Regrettably, recent search results indicate a lack of substantial reaction from global leading states specifically towards this issue. The focus has primarily been on geopolitical shifts involving China, India, and BRICS, with little mention of strong or specific responses regarding the targeting and killing of journalists in Gaza.
Al Jazeera Media Network, which has been providing live coverage of the Israeli genocide in Gaza for the past 23 months despite being barred by occupation authorities from entering to report on the war, has lost 10 of its journalists in Gaza, with a total death toll now exceeding 240 journalists killed in the Strip since October 2023.
The attack on the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis resulted in the deaths of more than 20 civilians, including patients and members of the press. Among the casualties were Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammad Salama, along with Hussam al-Masri, a photojournalist working for Reuters; photographer Mariam Abu Daqqa, who worked for the Associated Press and Independent Arabia; and Moaz Abu Taha.
The killing of journalist Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues on August 10, 2025, was widely denounced and condemned by journalists, international institutions, and world leaders. Al Jazeera Media Network condemns the killing of Mohammad Salama and the targeting of journalists as part of a systematic campaign to silence the truth.
Urgent and effective measures are required to protect journalists, civilians, and the fundamental right to information. Those holding positions of global leadership have a moral and legal responsibility to end the deliberate killing of journalists, safeguard basic human rights, and uphold press freedom.
The Rome Statute and the Geneva Conventions strictly prohibit the deliberate targeting of civilians and journalists in conflict zones. The ongoing campaign by the Israeli occupation against journalists has violated international norms and laws, potentially amounting to war crimes under the Rome Statute and the Geneva Conventions.
Al Jazeera Media Network asserts that Israel's impunity and determination to silence journalists is aimed at concealing ongoing crimes in Gaza, including genocide and the famine. The call for international pressure and immediate action to prevent the silencing of Gaza's voice through the systematic targeting and killing of its journalists grows ever more urgent.
