Israel, a Middle Eastern country with Jerusalem as its capital, is a state with Judaism as its official religion. However, Muslims and Christians also live there, and the region has a complex history marked by long-standing disputes with its neighboring countries, known as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This conflict revolves around who rightfully owns the land.

The Gaza Strip, located in the Middle East, is home to over 2 million Palestinians. Currently controlled by the Palestinian organization Hamas, the region has been the focus of ongoing conflicts between Israel and the Palestinians. Palestinians seek their own state, but Israeli soldiers control who and what enters the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, exerting significant influence alongside Palestinian politicians who hold some decision-making power.

The Gaza Strip has faced severe hardships, with thousands of civilians reportedly killed by Israeli attacks. Additionally, Israel has blocked the entry of food and medicine into the region, putting many Palestinians at risk of hunger and death. These actions have been met with criticism from the international community.

Hamas, an Islamic organization that claims to follow the religion of Islam and seeks the elimination of the Jewish state of Israel, launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in the murder of over 1,200 people and the abduction of more than 200.

Negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas are ongoing. Phase 1 of the ceasefire is almost over, and Israel is currently negotiating Phase 2. The negotiations involve people from Qatar and the USA, as well as representatives from Hamas. The expected topics of discussion for Phase 2 include the fate of approximately 60 more Israeli hostages still being held by Hamas militia in the Gaza Strip.

Former US President Donald Trump has been the United States' negotiation partner in these talks, having proposed the ceasefire plan. The future of the region remains uncertain, as the parties involved strive for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

It's important to note that most people in Israel speak Hebrew or Arabic, and many Israelis now live in the West Bank, a region that Palestinians claim is taking their land. Palestinians are an Arabic-speaking people primarily living in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The situation in the Gaza Strip is a complex and sensitive issue, with deep-rooted historical and religious contexts. As negotiations continue, it's crucial that all parties prioritise the safety and wellbeing of civilians on both sides.
