Italy's Fiat 500e emerges as the leading electric vehicle (EV) in sales within the German market
In the first quarter of 2022, the German Automotive market saw a significant shift in electric vehicle (EV) sales, with the Stellantis' small Italian BEV taking the top spot.
The small Italian BEV, whose manufacturer was not specified, recorded a total of 8,978 new registrations, making it the most popular EV in the German market during this period. Interestingly, the small BMW i3, a domestic vehicle that will be phased out by BMW, came in eighth place with 7,700 registrations.
Despite being behind the Italian BEV, the small BMW i3 outperformed several other popular EVs in the market. It was ahead of the Hyundai Kona, Opel Corsa-e, and Volkswagen ID.3, but it could not dethrone the German Automotive market's current leaders, Tesla's Model Y and Model 3.
Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 claimed the second and third positions, respectively, with 12,709 and 12,023 new registrations, respectively. The Model Y's impressive sales numbers put it just ahead of the Stellantis' small Italian BEV, as Tesla continues its pursuit of the Italian EV in the German market.
The Volkswagen ID.3, which is the best-selling vehicle from the Volkswagen ID series, came in fourth place with 8,956 new registrations. The Opel Corsa-e followed closely behind with 8,978 new registrations, while the Hyundai Kona rounded off the top five with 9,577 units sold.
It's worth noting that the Czech Skoda Enyaq also made an appearance in the top ten, with 7,701 registrations, slightly behind the small BMW i3. Volkswagen, with its ID. models, notably the ID.4, has been leading in electric vehicle sales in Germany and Europe during this period.
The focus of this report is on the German Automotive market for the first month of the quarter. However, it's important to note that the small BMW i3 is not the best-selling vehicle from any automaker in the German market, nor is it the best-selling vehicle from the Volkswagen ID series.
In conclusion, the German Automotive market is witnessing a surge in electric vehicle sales, with the Stellantis' small Italian BEV leading the way. Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are hot on its heels, while the Volkswagen ID.3, Opel Corsa-e, and Hyundai Kona also made strong showings. The small BMW i3, while performing well, could not quite match the sales numbers of its competitors.
