Japan and Germany expand their partnership: Memorandum of Mutual Collaboration Agreement
The delegation from Bremen's Senator for Economy, Ports, and Transformation, led by Managing Director Hubertus Lohner, is currently in Kobe, Japan, from September 1 to 5, 2025. The purpose of the visit is to strengthen economic and scientific relations between Bremen and Hyogo/Kobe.
The focus of the current visit, as well as the past three years of collaboration, is on hydrogen technology. ECOMAT, the Research and Technology Center built by WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH and operated by them since 2019, will present its competencies in this field at the International Industrial Fair 2025 Kobe.
During the visit, ECOMAT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kobe Material Testing Laboratory (KMTL). This MoU aims to foster closer cooperation in the field of materials science. Hubertus Lohner, chairman of the ECOMAT innovation platform, states that the MoU with KMTL will expand ECOMAT's international relations.
The program includes company and institute visits, such as those with the management of KMTL, ShinMaywa, Yamamoto Electric Works, HyTouch Kobe, and Airbus Helicopters. An exchange with Kobe University is also part of the program.
The delegation will also visit the deputy mayor of Kobe, a meeting that Senator for Economy, Ports, and Transformation, Kristina Vogt, had previously in 2023 during a previous visit. Kristina Vogt met with the deputy mayor to discuss the strengthening and expansion of cooperation between Bremen and Kobe.
Kristina Vogt expresses satisfaction with the expansion and strengthening of cooperation with Japan and Kobe. She hopes and is sure that the cooperation will continue to be strengthened and expanded in the future.
The North German hydrogen initiative HY-5 is also represented during the visit. HY-5 brings together the economic development agencies of the five northern German federal states to jointly promote North Germany as a hydrogen location.
The International Industrial Fair 2025 Kobe, one of the largest industrial fairs in West Japan, is another stop during the visit. The fair provides an excellent opportunity for ECOMAT to showcase its hydrogen technology competencies to a wide audience.
In conclusion, the visit to Kobe, Japan, is a significant step in strengthening the economic and scientific relations between Bremen and Kobe, with a particular focus on hydrogen technology. The MoU signed with KMTL is a testament to the ongoing collaboration and the commitment to further advancements in materials science.
