Japan Pursues Unprecedented Defense Budget of 8.8 Trillion Yen for Fiscal Year 2026
Japan's Defense Ministry Proposes Record Budget for Fiscal 2026
Japan's Ministry of Defense has announced a record budget request of 8,845.4 billion yen for fiscal 2026. The proposed budget, however, does not provide detailed information on how the funds will be allocated across different defense sectors, including the Shield multilayer coastal defense system.
The budget request does include 128.7 billion yen for the acquisition of unmanned vehicles for the Shield system. The Shield system, set to be built in fiscal 2027, will operate both manned and unmanned vehicles. The system aims to improve the operational capabilities of the Self-Defense Force, with new vehicles being introduced for the interception of enemy vessels that invade coastal areas and for the defense of radar sites.
In addition, new vehicles will be used for information gathering in the Shield system. The Ministry of Defense's plans for the Shield system do not involve any mention of changes or additions to ground, naval, or cyber defense forces.
The budget request also includes a reorganization of the Air Self-Defense Force into an air and space Self-Defense Force in fiscal 2026. However, the budget request does not specify the purpose of the reorganization or the improvements in space operations. The reorganization aims to improve the operational capabilities of the Self-Defense Force in space.
It is worth noting that the use of unmanned vehicles has significantly changed the way wars are fought, as seen in Ukraine and the Middle East. The identity of the head of Project Shield at Japan's Defense Agency, responsible for introducing unmanned vehicles in 2027, has not been publicly disclosed.
Despite the proposed budget, the budget request does not mention any increase or decrease in defense spending compared to previous years. Moreover, the budget request does not provide any information on the timeline for the approval of the proposed budget.
The lack of detailed information in the budget request has raised questions about the allocation of funds and the specific improvements that the proposed budget aims to bring to Japan's defense sector. The Ministry of Defense has yet to provide further details on these matters.
