Job Interview Experience - Software Engineer Position at UKG
In a series of virtual interviews conducted between July 11 and 17, Abhikalpsri navigated through four elimination rounds for a Software Engineer position at UKG. The interviews were held via LinkedIn, without a referral, and covered a wide range of topics, from technical expertise to behavioural fit and company knowledge.
The journey began with a Technical round, where the focus was on discussing Abhikalpsri's internships, projects, AI/ML fundamentals, and a coding exercise. The coding exercise involved implementing merge sort, quick sort, and solving the 3-Sum problem. The interviewer also delved into topics like model selection, regularization, monitoring, and practical GenAI concerns such as fine-tuning pitfalls and inference latency.
Next, Abhikalpsri faced a demo of the n8n Interview Prep Assistant, a tool designed to help candidates prepare for technical interviews. The presentation explained the purpose, workflow, user inputs, LLM usage, and question generation process of the assistant.
The second Technical round was a blend of technical and behavioural aspects. It focused on project ownership, product thinking, and behavioural fit. During the behavioural segment, motivation for AI/ML, handling ambiguous requirements, and dealing with failing models were discussed.
The third round was a Tech + Behavioural round, where the interviewer asked cross-questions on the implementation details of Abhikalpsri's projects, delving deeper into his practical understanding and problem-solving skills.
The final round was an HR round with a focus on fit, offers, relocation, and company/product knowledge. Tough HR questions were asked about other offers, retention intentions, and reasons for choosing UKG. It was recommended to research UKG products and use cases before the HR call.
The location preference stated by Abhikalpsri was Pune, with reasons given for learning opportunities and closer access to senior engineers. However, the name of the director SE with whom Abhikalpsri had the technical and behavioural part of his interview round on July 16 is not provided.
Throughout the interview process, Abhikalpsri demonstrated his technical prowess, problem-solving skills, and behavioural fit for the position. The interview for the Software Engineer position at UKG was a challenging yet enlightening experience for him.
