Coherent Announces Major Relocation of Operations from Mainz Site

In a significant development, Coherent, a leading manufacturer of industrial lasers, has announced that part of its production at the Mainz site will be relocated to the Philippines. This decision, reportedly due to cost reasons, has led to the dismissal of 78 employees at the German site since Wednesday.

The Mainz site, originally founded in 1994 as DILAS Diodenlaser, was acquired by Coherent, a US company, in 2016. The affected employees primarily work in production at the site in Galileo-Galilei-Straße 10 in Hechtsheim, Germany.

Javier Pato Otero, head of IG Metall Mainz-Wiesbaden, has emphasized that each employee has the option to appeal the dismissal. IG Metall and the works council have negotiated a severance package for the affected employees, details of which are included in the dismissal letters. The severance amount varies individually.

Initially, more than 80 positions were planned to be cut, but the number was reduced after negotiations. The dismissals at Coherent's Mainz site will occur in three stages: March 31, 2026, August 31, 2026, and January 31, 2027.

It's important to note that the site in Mainz will not be completely closed. Other operational parts will remain in Hechtsheim. There is no publicly available information regarding the exact timing of the final settlement of the last dismissals for employees at the Coherent site in Mainz.

Coherent's Mainz site was acquired by the company in 2016, marking a significant expansion of its operations in Europe. The company's decision to relocate part of its operations comes amidst a global trend of companies seeking to reduce costs and optimize their production processes.

This news has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing concern about the impact on the local economy and the affected employees. However, the company has assured that it is committed to supporting its employees during this transition period.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact Coherent's operations in Germany and its relationship with its employees and the local community.
