China Victory Day Parade: A Historic Gathering of Leaders and Veterans
In a significant display of camaraderie and remembrance, the 2025 China Victory Day Parade took place along Changan Avenue in central Beijing. The event, which was part of a series of celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, lasted approximately 90 minutes.
Among the distinguished guests in attendance was Chinese President Xi Jinping, who played a pivotal role in the proceedings. One of the veterans shaken hands with by President Xi Jinping was 94-year-old Law King-fai from Hong Kong, who was referred to as "an old hero" by the Chinese leader during their handshake.
Law King-fai's military service was during the war, and he was a member of the Hong Kong Independent Battalion of the Dongjiang Column, a guerilla force. His presence at the parade was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Chinese veterans during the war.
The parade also welcomed the attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. These leaders joined other prominent figures in honouring the veterans and commemorating the victory.
In addition to Law King-fai, six other Chinese veterans were also present at the parade. They too were shaken hands with by President Xi Jinping, recognising their invaluable contributions to China's history.
Despite the veteran from Hong Kong being referred to as the "old hero" by President Xi Jinping, the available sources did not provide his name. Nevertheless, the parade served as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of the Chinese veterans, their sacrifices, and the unity they represent.
