John Mitchell's Personal and Musically Schizophrenic Album "Feelings Are Good"

John Mitchell, known for his work in progressive rock, has released his most personal and outspoken album to date, Feelings Are Good, in July 2020. The album, released under the Lonely Robot banner, veers wildly between different styles, marking a departure from Mitchell's usual cosmic flights of fancy and universal musings on the human condition.

The narrative and sonic brushstrokes in several songs are drawn from Mitchell's life experiences. One such example is the techno title track opener, inspired by Imogen Heap's song Hide And Seek. Another track, Crystalline, was influenced by a song from one of Mitchell's former bands, It Bites. The album's cover features Mitchell's face with closed eyes taped up and a drawn-on smiley plaster covering his mouth, reflecting the album's personal and outspoken nature.

The album explores themes of people being guarded with their emotions, as seen in songs like Army Of One and Grief Is The Price Of Love. The latter is based on a home truth Mitchell learned as a child about the price tag every time you have a great love for something.

Mitchell plays all the instruments on the album, except for drums, which were played by Craig Blundell. Blundell's drumming style on the album is described as "very much the Keith Moon of prog."

Mitchell has admitted to being a belligerent so-and-so and having a habit of being conflicted about the way he feels about things. This introspection is evident in the album's lyrics, which are deeply personal and reflective.

The band with which Mitchell released an album in 2018 before finishing Feelings Are Good is Lonely Robot. John Mitchell has five Lonely Robot shows planned for December, featuring his regular live band including Craig Blundell on drums. The shows are planned for London, Germany, and the Netherlands, but the timing and whether they will still go ahead due to the pandemic is uncertain.

Life Is A Sine Wave was inspired by Turn It On Again's intro from Genesis, and the song Into The Lo-Fi was inspired by a trip down memory lane, during which Mitchell found a lot of cine film in the loft of his childhood home.

Mitchell is conscious of both the timing of the gigs and the album's release due to the pandemic and its possible outcomes. Despite the challenges, Feelings Are Good is a testament to Mitchell's talent and his ability to create music that resonates with listeners on a deeply personal level.
