Johnson Issues Decree to Oppose Imminent Immigration Enforcement, Potential National Guard Involvement
In a move to safeguard the rights of Chicagoans, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed the "Protecting Chicago" executive order on Saturday. The order establishes the Protecting Chicago Initiative, which aims to prevent any potential immigration-related operations that could disrupt the city's peace and unity.
The executive order comes in response to President Donald Trump's expected immigration crackdown. Federal government officials, including the President himself and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, are expected to be involved, along with state officials like Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago city officials such as Mayor Brandon Johnson. Coordination would also include city officials regarding any deployment of the National Guard or federal agents.
Governor Pritzker has stated that Chicago does not want Trump in the city. He also clarified that there is nothing the state of Illinois can legally do to stop any immigration enforcement operations. However, Johnson believes the executive order is one way to protect the rights of Chicagoans.
Johnson has expressed concerns about the potential impact of immigration enforcement on the city. He stated that he does not want to see tanks in the streets or families ripped apart due to immigration enforcement. Johnson has not received specific details about what federal law enforcement or military action could look like.
The Chicago Police Department will remain a locally controlled law enforcement agency, according to the executive order. The order also directs the city to pursue all legal and legislative avenues to stop the potential deployment of National Guard troops. Ald. Mike Rodriguez agrees with this stance, stating that the potential deployment of National Guard troops in Little Village is unacceptable and counterproductive to public safety.
Ald. Ray Lopez, on the other hand, believes that the deployment of National Guard troops could help improve public safety. Trump posted on Truth Social, stating that he is coming to Chicago if Governor JB Pritzker does not straighten out the city's crime situation. Pritzker responded to Trump's message, asking for proof of life before sending help.
Three people were fatally shot over the weekend, according to the Chicago Police Department. The Protecting Chicago Initiative directs city agencies to regularly submit Freedom of Information Act requests regarding actions taken by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The initiative aims to keep the city informed and prepared, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
