Joint statement issued by the Prosecutor's Office of Braunschweig, the Wolfenbüttel Police Department, and the City Administration of Wolfenbüttel
On September 1, 2025, a concerning incident took place at the playground on Geibelstraße/Ackerstraße in Wolfenbüttel. A 1.5-year-old toddler was found intoxicated, with the mother present during the incident.
The intoxication occurred between 15:00 and 19:00, and the affected playground area was immediately closed by the police and the city of Wolfenbüttel for a thorough search, including the use of drug-sniffing dogs. No further intoxicating substances were found during the search.
During the stay, the child showed unusual behavior, apathy, loss of appetite, and a strong fixation on a toy. Upon arrival at the Clinic of Braunschweig, symptoms suggested intoxication, and a urine test showed positive results for cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, and ecstasy.
The child remains in the pediatric intensive care unit, but there is no immediate danger to life. Further blood tests are pending to confirm and quantify the substances.
The city administration of Wolfenbüttel and the police are urging all parents and guardians to closely supervise their children during playground visits. It is strongly recommended to prevent children from picking up or putting unknown objects in their mouths. Suspicious observations or objects should be reported immediately to the relevant authorities.

The playground was reopened on September 4, 2025, at 15:00, by the police and the city. The main play area where the incident occurred was in the northeastern part of the playground. The toddler's mother was present on the playground during the intoxication, but no other individual with drugs was identified.
During the car ride, the child vomited a "plastic-like" material. The father of the toddler arrived around 17:00. The police are still investigating the source of the intoxicating substances and are appealing for any witnesses or information that may help in their investigation.
