"Jubilant individual sustains damage in the aftermath of a supermarket roof collapse"
In an unexpected turn of events, a roof collapse at a Rewe supermarket in the south of Baden-Württemberg has left four people injured and caused significant damage. The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon, with 26 people inside the store at the time.
The roof, which had recently been renovated and reopened in mid-August, gave way, causing debris to fall onto the cash registers and the floor. Among the debris, inflated balloons and a mirror were found. The fallen roof debris also hangs precariously over the cash registers, adding to the urgency of the situation.
Rescue teams, including the fire department, have been working tirelessly to search for any injured individuals. They are using thermal imaging cameras to aid their efforts. The fire department had previously turned off the electricity, water, and gas to ensure safety. Solar panels on the roof had to be made safe by turning off the power.
Two of the injured sustained severe injuries, while the other two suffered less severe injuries. Fortunately, a rescue helicopter was deployed to the scene, but it did not transport any of the severely injured to a clinic.
Mike König, deputy commander of the Lauchringen fire department, is involved in the incident. The volunteer firefighters estimate the damage to the building to be in the millions. The goods, especially the refrigerated and frozen ones, are at risk of spoiling due to the power outage and the damaged store conditions.
Investigators are likely to deploy an expert to determine the cause of the collapse. The specific construction works carried out and whether work was done on the roof remain unclear at this time. No statement from the trading company Rewe has been made by late evening.
