Jujutsu Kaisen spinoff potentially in the works: Gege Akutami hints at multiple upcoming projects, including 'Mojuro'

In an exciting turn of events for fans of Jujutsu Kaisen, creator Gege Akutami has announced a new manga titled 'Mojuro'. Set to launch in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #41, scheduled for September 8, this new series promises to captivate readers for at least six months.

'Mojuro' is a spinoff of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise, serving as a sequel to the original series, picking up where the story left off. The illustrator for this new venture is Yuji Iwasaki, known for his work on 'Cypher Academy'. However, it's important to note that 'Mojuro' is not a direct continuation of the original series but is set in a parallel line, potentially opening the door to many different projects.

Gege Akutami has praised Yuji Iwasaki's work, expressing his delight at collaborating with the talented illustrator. In a recent interview, Akutami revealed that 'Mojuro' was not initially backed by a concrete foundation, but the potential it held to expand the main story, delve deeper into its setting, or even shift eras entirely, was too compelling to ignore.

The primary protagonists of 'Mojuro' are Yuuka Okkotsu and Tsurugi Okkotsu. For those unfamiliar, Yuuka is a first-year student at Jujutsu High, while Tsurugi is a former Jujutsu Sorcerer who left the school due to unspecified reasons.

Interestingly, the 'YutaMaki' pairing from the original Jujutsu Kaisen series, Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, will officially become romantic partners and later a married couple in 'Mojuro'. This development is sure to delight fans of the original series.

Meanwhile, fans of Jujutsu Kaisen can look forward to the debut of Season 3, titled 'The Culling Game', on Crunchyroll in January 2026. The teaser for this season was recently released, promising an intense and action-packed continuation of the story.

It's worth noting that the Jujutsu Kaisen manga concluded in September 2024. Despite this, Akutami has made it clear that he is happy if readers enjoy 'Mojuro' as a new entry point into the world of Jujutsu.

In a surprising turn of events, it has been confirmed that Hiroshi Seko, not Yuji Iwasaki, is the illustrator for 'Mojuro'. This change in illustrators may have come about due to the demands of the new series or creative decisions made by Akutami.

As 'Mojuro' is a short-term serialization, it is expected to consume Weekly Shonen Jump's pages for about half a year. If successful, 'Mojuro' is expected to continue for approximately three volumes. However, if it doesn't run its full course, it may end up being scrapped mid-way.

Regardless, the anticipation for 'Mojuro' is high, and fans are eagerly awaiting its debut in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #41. With its compelling storyline, new characters, and potential for exciting developments, 'Mojuro' promises to be a thrilling addition to the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise.
