Jury finds van Poppel guilty despite Lipowitz's efforts for their team partnership
Deutschland Tour 2025: Waerenskjold on the Brink of Victory
After four stages of the five-day Deutschland Tour, Søren Waerenskjold is poised to win the race. The Danish rider holds a ten-second lead going into the final stage from Halle to Magdeburg.
Waerenskjold's teammate, Florian Lipowitz, has played an unusual role in supporting the team despite health concerns and pain from a previous crash. Lipowitz crashed on the second stage and sustained bruises on his hand, shoulder, and knee. However, he continued the race, expressing his willingness to take on this role to support the team.
Lipowitz tried to support Van Poppel as best as he could during the race, but his teammate's victory on the third stage was revoked after he blocked Matthew Brennan in the finale, resulting in his demotion by the jury. Despite this setback, Lipowitz is satisfied with the team's performance, as he told ARD.
The profile of the third stage was too challenging for the sprinters, and several riders, including Jonathan Milan from Italy and Phil Bauhaus, were dropped early. Marius Mayerhofer finished tenth in the third stage. No German riders played a significant role in the finale.
Søren Waerenskjold was allowed to celebrate his victory on the third stage after Van Poppel's disqualification. The 163.7-kilometer stage is expected to end in a mass sprint, with Waerenskjold on the verge of winning the five-day Deutschland Tour.
The last German success in the Deutschland Tour was in 2021, when Nils Politt won the third stage and the overall victory. As Waerenskjold prepares for the final stage, he has the chance to become the first Danish winner of the Deutschland Tour since its inception in 1949.
In the meantime, Lipowitz continues to push through the pain, determined to support his team until the end. The final stage of the Deutschland Tour promises to be an exciting conclusion to an unpredictable race.
