Toyota Yaris Wins European Car of the Year 2021
Jury Head Explains Reasons Behind Selecting Yaris as European Car of the Year
In a competitive landscape, the Toyota Yaris has been crowned the European Car of the Year 2021. This prestigious award, given to the best new model released in Europe each year, is decided by a jury of 59 motor journalists from 22 countries.
The Yaris' success can be attributed to its innovative hybrid technology, compact design, and overall efficiency, making it well-suited for urban mobility and environmentally conscious driving. The car was praised for its good handling, fun to drive, and value-for-money.
Europe, known for its tough and competitive market, particularly in the area of compact cars, provided a challenging backdrop for the Yaris. However, it managed to stand out among the seven shortlisted finalists. The Yaris was the cheapest car in the shortlist and was the best-selling car recently in its segment in Europe.
Frank Janssen, president of the Car of the Year 2021 award jury, expressed admiration for Akio Toyoda's work and encouraged him to keep going. Janssen, who has a keen interest in the future of automotive technology, questioned the appropriateness of committing everything to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and saw fuel cells that generate electricity from hydrogen as an important technology for the future.
Janssen believes that the hybrid system is the key point to bring CO2 emissions down and sees it as the best solution at the moment, especially for those without private charging points or sufficient infrastructure for electric vehicles. He also believes that regeneration of brake energy can be used in other propulsion systems, including BEVs and FCEVs.
Despite his support for hybrid technology, Janssen predicts a significant increase in battery electric vehicles over the next 10-15 years. He hopes that all manufacturers will collaborate on fuel cell technology and infrastructure in the future.
The judging criteria for the Car of the Year award include design, comfort, safety, economy, handling, performance, functionality, environmental requirements, driver satisfaction, and price. In the competitive world of compact cars, the Yaris excelled in these areas, demonstrating its worthiness as the European Car of the Year 2021.
As diesel engines fade out and petrol engines will still be present, electric vehicles will see a strong increase. The Toyota Yaris, with its hybrid technology, is poised to play a significant role in this transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. Janssen gave the Yaris his highest score of eight points, reflecting the jury's unanimous approval of this outstanding vehicle.
