Juso's newly elected board voices discontent over the antiquated depiction of female representation

Last Saturday, the district conference of the Jusos Oberhausen was held at K14, marking a significant moment in the organisation's history. The conference, which saw a large number of new members in attendance, was primarily focused on board elections.

In a surprising turn of events, current chairman Gianni Virgallita did not run for re-election, paving the way for new leadership. Tim Tzscheppan stepped forward as a candidate for the chairman position, while Yannik Berg, Jannik Hohmann, and Christoph Horn ran for board member positions. Newcomer Frederick Cordes, a former chairman of the Jusos Oberhausen, also introduced himself, expressing his commitment to advocating for Juso issues in the state parliament.

The elections saw a unanimous victory for the entire board, elected by the UBK with a large margin of trust. The new district chairman elected on October 10, 2020, is Timo Männel. Christoph Knepper and Christin Becker were elected as deputy chairpersons, and Saskia Fischer and Michele Horn retained their positions on the board. One board position remains vacant and will be filled as soon as possible.

Two resolutions were referred to the SPD Oberhausen party conference in November. The first resolution demands that Oberhausen declare itself a safe haven for refugees, a move that reflects the organisation's commitment to social justice and inclusivity. The second resolution calls for the creation of a discussion forum for a socio-ecological Oberhausen, highlighting the Jusos Oberhausen's focus on environmental sustainability and social equality.

However, the reporting of the conference was less pleasant for the Jusos Oberhausen. An article presented a worldview that the Jusos Oberhausen categorically rejects. The author accused young women at the conference of being more concerned with keeping children quiet than with the session. The Jusos Oberhausen firmly rejects this accusation and will discuss whether they have overlooked details in the reporting.

In response to the election defeat, MP Dirk Vöpel promised a thorough examination and announced restructuring. New MP Frederick Cordes also promised to advocate for Juso issues in the state parliament. The Jusos Oberhausen will continue to strive for their goals, with a focus on inclusivity, social justice, and environmental sustainability, and will ensure that their sessions remain open to young families and especially young women with children in the future.

Gianni Virgallita, who has shown commitment since 2015, and Lukas Heilmann and Simon Theis, who were board members, also did not run for re-election. The Jusos Oberhausen looks forward to a new chapter under the leadership of Timo Männel and the newly elected board members.
