Joakim Lagergren's Close Call at the Irish Open

Swedish golfer Joakim Lagergren came agonisingly close to winning his first DP World Tour title since 2018 at the Irish Open. Despite not securing the victory, Lagergren's performance at The K Club brought significant rewards.

Lagergren, who had previously played 283 events on the DP World Tour, earning approximately $6m in total, finished in second place at the Irish Open. This runner-up finish earned him $660,000, more than a 10th of his total earnings on the DP World Tour.

The top 10 in the Race to Dubai rankings, not otherwise exempt, earn a life-changing PGA Tour card. With his current 15th position in the Race to Dubai rankings, Lagergren is well on his way to securing a spot. However, he needs to maintain this position by the end of October's Genesis Championship to ensure his place in the DP World Tour Playoffs.

Rory McIlroy, the four-time Major champion, holed a near 30-foot eagle putt at the 18th to force a playoff. In the playoff, McIlroy emerged victorious, securing his second title at the Irish Open. Lagergren found the water on the third playoff hole, allowing McIlroy to seize the win.

Angel Hidalgo was one of the other challengers in the playoff, but it was Lagergren who showed the most promise in his recent performances. His T8 at the Omega European Masters helped him move into the world's top 200, and his career-high world ranking is now 121st, achieved after his runner-up finish at the Irish Open.

Lagergren's wait for his first DP World Tour title since 2018 continues, but his recent performances have significantly boosted his total earnings on the DP World Tour. His career-high world ranking could be a factor as the big events loom next year, if he continues the upward trajectory.

However, it's worth noting that Lagergren's performances have not yet placed him in contention for any of the four Majors. Nevertheless, with his improved form and rising world ranking, it's an exciting time for Lagergren and his fans as they look forward to what the future holds.

Lagergren will play in at least the first DP World Tour Playoffs, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, with a prize fund of $9m. This event, along with the others in the playoffs, presents Lagergren with the opportunity to claim his long-awaited title and cement his place among the DP World Tour's elite.
