Kamchatka State Technical University will educate and train mining labor force.
In a significant step forward for the mining industry in Kamchatka Krai, Russia, the Kamchatka State Technical University (KamchatSTU) and the Mining Industry Association of Kamchatka have signed a strategic partnership agreement. This partnership marks a milestone, as Kamchatka becomes the first region in Russia to launch such a project aimed at training specialists for the mining industry.
The agreement, signed by Alexei Voytov, Vice-President of the Mining Industry Association of Kamchatka, and Sergei Levkov, Rector of KamchatSTU, aims to develop a comprehensive system for training personnel for the regional mining industry. This system will encompass cooperation with scientific and educational institutions, staff training, career guidance, and conducting relevant scientific research.
The mining industry in Kamchatka is experiencing a surge in popularity among residents, and this partnership is a timely response to this growing demand. Alexei Voytov noted that graduates from KamchatSTU, particularly those in energy, ventilation, heating, and repair of control and measuring equipment, are highly sought after in the mining industry.
In 2022, the "Professionalism" project for training specialists for the mining industry was launched at the Kamchatka Polytechnic Technical College. This project, which was the first of its kind in the region, is part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the partnership between higher educational institutions and the mining industry.
Despite limited experience in joint projects with higher educational institutions, work in this direction is actively ongoing. The university has presented opportunities for training personnel in various areas, expanding cooperation prospects.
One successful example of collaboration is the opening of the first Kamchatka master's program in volcanology, organised jointly by Kamchatka State University named after Vitus Bering and Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov.
In recent years, KamchatSTU has expanded its cooperation with regional industrial companies such as Kamchatgazprom, Kamchatenergo, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Mining and Processing Plant. This collaboration has focused on joint research projects, internships, and technological development.
Under the new agreement, training of students, organisation of internships at industry enterprises, and involvement of practicing specialists in educational activities are planned. The partner for this master's program is the company "Haileland Gold", which covers student tuition for two years and organises familiarisation trips to the production site.
Mining professions are gaining popularity among residents of the region, and this partnership is set to further boost this trend by providing a solid educational foundation for those aspiring to join the mining industry. KamchatSTU will develop and modernise educational programs for mining enterprises, with a focus on emergency protection, comprehensive safety, environmental safety, and maintenance and repair of technological equipment.
This partnership is a significant step towards strengthening the mining industry in Kamchatka Krai and ensuring a steady supply of skilled professionals to meet the growing demand.
