Keeping the Artisanal Tradition of Florence Alive Through Stefano Ricci
Stefano Ricci Acquires Moleria Locchi to Preserve Artisan Traditions in Florence
In a move aimed at safeguarding the rich artisan heritage of Florence, luxury brand Stefano Ricci has recently acquired Moleria Locchi, a Florentine crystal and glass workshop that has been restoring and engraving precious objects since the late 19th century.
The acquisition comes at a time when the pandemic has put particular stress on the artisan sector in Florence. The preservation of artisan traditions in the city is both remarkable and fragile, and the pandemic has underscored the need for continuous efforts to protect these age-old techniques.
Stefano Ricci, known for its luxurious boutiques in cities from Baku to Beverly Hills, intends to incorporate Moleria Locchi's work into its boutiques, interior design projects, and special real estate projects. By doing so, the brand hopes to make the craft of Moleria Locchi more visible to the public.
Moleria Locchi was originally founded by the Locchi family, known for their expertise in textile manufacturing, before being acquired by Stefano Ricci. The workshop, located in the San Frediano neighborhood of Florence, which has been a haven for artisans since the 1800s, will continue its traditional craftsmanship under the new ownership.
Stefano Ricci's acquisition of Moleria Locchi and its previous revival of Antico Setificio Fiorentino, a silk weaver founded in 1786, are part of its ongoing efforts to preserve artisan traditions in Florence. The company exclusively manufactures in Italy and engages more than 300 artisans across various tasks like shoemaking, tailoring, silversmithing, and leatherwork.
For the last 12 years, Stefano Ricci has collaborated with Moleria Locchi to create glasses, decanters, and other objects for its home line. The brand has also been welcoming select visitors to Antico Setificio Fiorentino to view production firsthand. With the acquisition of Moleria Locchi, Stefano Ricci plans to replicate this visitor experience at its new acquisition in the coming months.
By acquiring and reviving these traditional Florentine workshops, Stefano Ricci believes that it is not just preserving the past, but giving traditional crafts a true future. The cycle of preservation through use, the brand says, ensures that these techniques, archives, and tools will continue to thrive and be passed down to future generations.
In this way, Stefano Ricci is not just a luxury brand, but a steward of Florence's rich artisan heritage. By putting its resources behind the preservation of these traditional workshops, the brand is ensuring that the city's artisan sector will continue to be a beacon of craftsmanship for years to come.
