Kentucky Governor Signs AI Governance, Worker Protection Bills; Vetoes Others
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has signed several bills into law, including measures related to AI governance, barbering regulations, and worker protections. He also vetoed a few bills, citing constitutional violations and worker safety concerns.
Among the signed bills, Senate Bill 4 establishes an Artificial Intelligence Governance Committee to set standards for AI system use. Meanwhile, Senate Bill 22 grants the Board of Barbering authority to govern, regulate, and license mobile shops. In terms of worker protections, House Bill 38 increases penalties for violating protective orders, while Gov. Beshear vetoed House Bill 398 for abandoning Kentucky's worker protection policies.
Gov. Beshear also signed bills expanding various programs. House Bill 605 broadens the eligibility for the GRANT program, and House Bill 73 adds WeLeadCS, a virtual computer science career academy, to the Teachers' Retirement System's list of participating employers. Additionally, House Bill 10 allows property owners to request immediate removal of squatters under certain circumstances.
Other signed bills include House Bill 184, which extends an existing regulatory relief program, and House Bill 152, supporting public ground ambulance providers through a Medicaid supplemental payment program. Furthermore, Senate Bill 169 adds internet service providers to the list of those subject to subpoena in investigations of child exploitation and internet crimes.
Gov. Beshear's actions reflect a balance of progress and protection, with bills signed to advance AI governance, support workers, and expand programs, while vetoes were issued to safeguard Kentucky's longstanding policies and worker safety.
