In a surprising turn of events, Kevin Kühnert, the former General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany, has completed a 1,000-kilometer long-distance hiking journey on the North Alpine Trail in Austria.
Kühnert, who announced his solo hiking trip on Instagram half a year ago, has now completed 50 stages over the past two months. The North Alpine Trail, opened in 1975, leads from Lake Neusiedler to Bregenz on Lake Constance.
Throughout his journey, Kühnert has encountered various weather conditions, including rain, wind, cold, and fresh snow. Short encounters on the way or brief luxuries like a lukewarm shower instead of a cold cat wash are considered oases in the long-distance hiking routine.
Kühnert's attire during his hiking trip consists of dark hiking pants, a T-shirt, and a cap. He has shared a series of photos on Instagram featuring mountain and animal motifs, one of which shows him kneeling on a meadow, his chin resting on his hands.
In his Instagram post, Kühnert wrote that he is unsure when he will have the time for such a challenge again. He cited health issues as the reason for his resignation from the SPD in October 2024 and expressed concerns about his personal safety in April. However, he has not ruled out a return to politics.
Kühnert's current challenge, as suggested by his Instagram post, is a physical and mental one. He finds that under extreme conditions, simplicity allows for the good moment. His hiking experiences have led him to view standards shifting quickly and losing meaning when steadily hiking daily mileage. He describes hiking as providing space and time for thinking, sorting, and orienting.
Interestingly, Kühnert's professional ambitions are not clear from his Instagram post. After resigning as SPD General Secretary and not running in the 2024 Bundestag election, it is unclear what his next career step will be.
Despite his political retreat, Kühnert's hiking journey has captured the attention of many, inspiring a sense of adventure and resilience in the face of challenges. As he steps off the North Alpine Trail, one can only wonder what lies ahead for the former SPD General Secretary.
