In the heart of Dormagen, a special ceremony was held on Friday, September 5th, as the city administration honoured long-time resident Klaus Speth with a heartfelt gesture. The occasion took place at the playground in Roncalli Square, a place that Klaus has been diligently maintaining for over a decade.

Mayor Erik Lierenfeld expressed his gratitude to Klaus during the small ceremony, acknowledging his decades of dedication to the playground. The special gesture was a plaque attached to a bench under a tree near the climbing frame on the playground. The plaque reads, "In Recognition of Klaus Speth, 'Playground Grandpa' and exemplary committed neighbor."

Klaus Speth, a resident of Delrath in Dormagen, has been a beacon of civic engagement for many at Roncalli Square. His commitment to maintaining order, cleanliness, and the upkeep of the playground has made it a place where children can play freely and families feel at home.

Klaus's dedication to the playground began in earnest in 2015, and his efforts were formally recognised in 2014 when he became an official area patron. He is the only "triple patron" in the city area, as he also takes care of a dog waste bag station. His work on the renovation of the playground has not gone unnoticed, and he has been a role model for many.

The idea for the plaque came from citizens of Dormagen who wanted to acknowledge Klaus's commitment. The city administration took up the suggestion and attached the bench plaque in honour of Klaus Speth. Rene Ubber and neighbouring residents were present at the ceremony, as Klaus and his wife, Maria Luise Speth, sat on the bench where the plaque was attached.

In 2023, Klaus was awarded the Golden Coin of the city administration for his dedication. The playground at Roncalli Square is a testament to his tireless efforts, and the plaque serves as a reminder of his significant contribution to the community. Klaus Speth, the "Playground Grandpa," continues to inspire and make a positive impact on the city of Dormagen.
