"Kristi Noem, former official, tripped in her response to South Park's satirical jab"
South Park's 27th season is off to a controversial start, with the second episode titled "Got A Nut" airing on October 11, 2023. The episode features a mocking portrayal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
In the episode, Noem's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is depicted carrying out an immigration raid in Heaven and apprehending Dora the Explorer. This portrayal prompted a response from Noem, who gave an interview to podcaster Glenn Beck.
Noem criticized the depiction of her in South Park, stating that it's lazy to make fun of women for how they look. However, after the episode aired, Twitter users pointed out an unusual shift in Noem's opinion on the episode, as she later embraced it.
This response is similar to that of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who also updated his Twitter profile picture after being targeted in the show. South Park's creators have since updated their profile pictures across social media to show their version of Noem with her Botox melted.
The creators of South Park have used their social media profiles to respond to Noem's criticism. In a move to counter the US government's attempt to encourage people to join ICE, the creators used a still from the teaser trailer of episode two to depict Noem's ICE agents as incompetent.
In the first episode of the season, titled "Sermon on the 'Mount'", US President Donald Trump was depicted getting into bed with Satan and threatening to sue an artist. Vice president JD Vance featured in the second episode, but in miniature form.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers addressed the episode in a statement to Variety, accusing the Left of hypocrisy, stating that they have come after South Park for offensive content but are now praising the show. Rogers also stated that South Park is a satirical programme and should be taken as such.
After the episode aired, JD Vance stated that he has "finally made it". A scene in the South Park episode shows a makeup team having to surround Noem and touch up her makeup after her Botox melts.
Noem responded to the mockery in South Park by updating her social media profile picture to her South Park equivalent. In her interview, Noem stated that if South Park wanted to criticize her job, they should do so, but they can't and instead pick something petty like her appearance.
South Park's creators have a history of taking on controversial topics and figures, and the 27th season is no exception. As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how the creators tackle other political figures and issues.
