Kunsthaus Wiesbaden: A Hub for Art, Culture, and Inclusion

The Kunsthaus in Wiesbaden, a renowned centre for contemporary art and socially relevant discourses, is gearing up for an exciting future. With its innovative and inclusive event and mediation formats, the Kunsthaus continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression.

Originally designed as an elementary school in 1863, the historic old building has undergone significant transformations over the years. The city council approved the general renovation of the municipal Kunsthaus, Schulberg 10, in a resolution on November 24, 2015. The architectural office Lehners & Barbian was commissioned to implement the renovation in 2017. After eight years of meticulous work, the Atelierhaus, now under monument protection, has reopened its doors.

The Atelierhaus houses eleven ateliers spread over four floors, currently occupied by fourteen regional and international artists from various fields, including sculpture, painting, photography, sound, and performance art. One of the highlights of the Atelierhaus is the auditorium, formerly the Werk- und Kunstschule Wiesbaden, which will officially open on September 10, 2025, with the exhibition "Gesichtslos. Frauen in der Prostitution".

The Kunsthalle and the redesigned Aula, both venues for contemporary art, are integral parts of the Kunsthaus. The Aula, set to open on the same day as the auditorium, will debut with the exhibition "Faceless. Women in Prostitution". Barrier-free accessibility has been a priority in the renovation, with the installation of an elevator and the renovation of the exhibition room "Aula".

The Kunsthaus hosts six to eight exhibitions annually, and the redesigned Aula will be available for exhibitions and events. The Artothek, located within the Kunsthaus, offers art on loan for homes and houses the municipal art collection with 4000 art treasures. An art room for mediation offers is also available, providing a space for dialogue and engagement with the artworks.

On September 6, 2023, the Kunsthaus will celebrate its history and future with open ateliers, workshops, performances, talks, art speed dating, and dance. Citizens are encouraged to visit and engage with the vibrant artistic community at the Kunsthaus.

For any questions or further information, the Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden is the point of contact. A subsidy from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety was granted for the energetic optimization of the building, ensuring the Kunsthaus's sustainability for future generations.

Vincent Weber, who led the Atelierhaus from 1954 to 1965, transformed it into a renowned training institution oriented towards the Bauhaus. Today, the Kunsthaus continues Weber's legacy, providing a platform for artists and fostering a culture of inclusivity and innovation.
