Kyiv Visit by Coalition Members: Spahn and Miersch journey to Ukraine
Jens Spahn and Matthias Miersch, the chairs of the CDU/CSU and SPD factions, made a historic visit to Kyiv, marking an unprecedented show of support for Ukraine. The joint trip, which also included visits to German soldiers en route, is seen as a significant signal to Ukraine, their own parties, and the German public, demonstrating the determination of the coalition government.
Upon arrival in Kyiv, Spahn and Miersch paid tribute to the fallen soldiers. Spahn emphasized the importance of a well-equipped Ukrainian army for the best security guarantee. The airport they visited, approximately 60 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is a crucial transit point for the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine.
In discussions surrounding the possible use of released Russian funds in the EU, Spahn stated that if someone invades their neighboring country, wants to redraw borders, kills, rapes, then there must be consequences. He suggested a discussion on whether and how these frozen assets could also be used. Miersch, too, showed openness to this idea, referring to ongoing discussions among Europeans about further sanctions against Russia and stating, "In this regard, all options are on the table."
The possible delivery of Taurus cruise missiles and other German weapons systems for Ukraine has been a topic of public discussion, but it seems the parties have chosen to keep Russia in the dark by ceasing open discussions on the matter. Regarding the deployment of German troops, Miersch stated that any debate about this possibility is premature but "We rule nothing out."
The planned summit between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not taken place, leading to hopes for serious negotiations fading in the past two weeks since the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite this, Spahn and Miersch's visit to Ukraine is a clear indication of Germany's ongoing commitment to supporting the country.
The German parliament plays a crucial role in supporting Ukraine, allocating budget funds and having the final say on the deployment of German soldiers in the event of a ceasefire. The joint retreat of the two faction leaders last week, where a restart of the black-red coalition was celebrated, seems to have provided a renewed impetus for this support. Spahn and Miersch's visit to Ukraine, their first-ever visit together, underscores this renewed determination.
This visit to Ukraine is a significant step in the ongoing efforts to support the country and maintain European security. Both Spahn and Miersch emphasized the significance of the Ukraine conflict for European security, and their actions speak volumes about Germany's commitment to the region.
