Lack of enforced lockdowns during the Christmas period
The Federal Government's Commissioner for Care, Andreas Westerfellhaus, has proposed an unusual solution for Christmas celebrations this year, aiming to minimize the risk of Corona infection.
In an interview, Westerfellhaus suggested that families celebrate Christmas "in shifts" by dividing into smaller groups and celebrating with each other on different days. This idea was inspired by the situation in nursing homes, where staggered visits have been encouraged to limit the number of contacts.
Westerfellhaus emphasized the importance of the quality of life of the people, particularly for those with dementia who need personal contact. He stated that "unusual times require unusual solutions."
The German federal government had previously planned to limit private Christmas gatherings to reduce infection risk. From December 28, 2021, a maximum of ten vaccinated or recovered persons could gather privately, with stricter rules if unvaccinated people attended. Visits to care homes were to continue with testing and mask requirements, emphasizing protective measures and the responsibility of individuals.
In a separate development, Westerfellhaus mentioned that there can be no general answer about bringing grandparents from nursing homes for Christmas, especially in corona hotspots. He also did not address specific Christmas celebration advice in another statement.
No new information about the provision of corona tests was given in this article. However, Westerfellhaus did mention that the delivery of tests and corresponding training are currently being prepared.
As the holiday season approaches, the focus remains on maintaining safety while preserving the quality of life for all. Westerfellhaus's suggestion of celebrating with fewer people but twice as much, and suggesting gift exchanges on the 28th of December or later, may provide a solution for many families to enjoy the festivities while minimizing the risk of Corona infection.
