Lack of European Engagement Observed
In the upcoming European elections, voters across the continent, including Germany, have an opportunity to send a clear message. With the rise of populist parties, the polls could potentially reflect discontent and a call for change.
Recent surveys suggest a shift in public sentiment towards the European Union (EU) among Germans. In May 2019, approximately 70% of Germans expressed a positive sentiment towards the EU. However, today, less than 50% do. This decline may be attributed to a lack of understanding and interest in EU processes and decisions, as well as retrospective discontent about regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which was decided upon within the EU framework but only publicly debated when member states implemented it.
The opaque nature of EU decisions is a concern for almost eight out of ten respondents. This lack of transparency contributes to the decrease in pro-European sentiment among Germans. To combat this, all parties—including the SPD, CDU, AfD, and newer parties like the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance—are urged to increase public attention to the European elections. This call emphasizes the need for democratic resilience, combating extremism, and promoting high voter turnout.
The significance of the June election needs to be made clear to all. Every vote in the European elections is important, and there's a risk of lower voter turnout, which could lead to an unusually high proportion of populists being elected to the parliament.
To foster European public awareness, politics, media, and citizens themselves must play their part. The public's involvement and understanding in EU-level political debates is currently insufficient, and there's a need for broader public interest in the EU, its institutions, and its mechanisms.
