Landshut region's initial job fair catering to inclusivity concludes triumphantly
On May 22, 2025, the Ergoldinger Citizens' Hall in Landshut played host to the Inclusive Job Fair, an event aimed at promoting inclusive employment in the region. Organised by Carolin Voelkner from the City of Landshut and Linda Pilz from Landkreis Landshut, with the support of the Round Table on Inclusion in the Workplace, the fair attracted over 300 visitors, including many people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
The day was marked by a firm commitment to breaking down barriers and encouraging equal opportunities. In his address, Holger Kiesel, the Bavarian disability commissioner, urged exhibiting companies to "take the opportunity today not just to learn about a resume, but to meet the person behind it - with all their skills, qualifications, ideas, and motivation."
Many employers engaged in direct conversations with visitors during the fair, offering a unique opportunity for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses to better position themselves on the job market. Landrat Peter Dreier, sponsor of the event, emphasised that the fair demonstrated how inclusion can succeed in everyday life through concrete offers, personal encounters, and a firm commitment to breaking down barriers.
The fair also featured a supporting program, including practical presentations on topics like "special application," "work budget," and funding opportunities for employers. Journalist Matthias Keck moderated a panel discussion at the event, during which people like Diana Back from the Center for Bavaria Family and Social Affairs shared their experiences of working with a disability.
Despite a shortage of skilled workers, many companies still do not meet the legal quota for employing people with disabilities. This was a topic of concern for Holger Kiesel, who urged that every person should be allowed to test their limits and rejected discriminatory statements in job interviews.
The event was sponsored by Mayor Alexander Putz, who stated that the Inclusive Job Fair set a significant signal for encounters on an equal footing. The organisers of the Inclusive Job Fair announced their intention to further develop the platform and establish it permanently if possible. The Internationaler Bund (IB) supported the initiative for the Inclusive Job Fair, including its financing, as part of their project planning and integration projects.
Holger Kiesel and Karl-Heinz Arians, ministerial director and head of the department for inclusion of people with disabilities at the Bavarian State Ministry for Family, Work, and Social Affairs, sent their greetings to the event. Mario Weidisch, chairman of the disability council in the district, experienced discriminatory statements in job interviews, highlighting the need for events like the Inclusive Job Fair to foster a more inclusive job market.
The unemployment rate among people with disabilities remains almost twice as high as the average. However, the Inclusive Job Fair served as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the potential for a more inclusive and equitable job market in the future.
