Elderly Woman in Hopfen am See Escapes Shock Call Scam

An 86-year-old retiree in the eastern Allgäu community of Hopfen am See narrowly avoided falling victim to a shock call scam last Friday afternoon. The scam, which targeted the retiree's concern for her daughter, nearly led to a potential money transfer.

The incident unfolded near Kaufbeuren when the scammer, posing as a police officer, made contact with the retiree. Claiming that her daughter had caused a fatal traffic accident, the scammer demanded a bail of 10,000 euros to avoid her daughter's imprisonment. The scammer further threatened legal consequences if the bail was not paid promptly.

During the call, the scammer inquired about the jewelry in the retiree's house, suggesting a possible intention to extort valuable items. However, the retiree's daughter returned home just in time, preventing the potential transfer of money.

In a statement, the local police urged the public not to comply with the demands of callers in similar cases. They emphasised that genuine authorities would never request personal or financial information over the phone.

This incident serves as a reminder to stay vigilant against such scams, especially for the elderly and vulnerable members of our community. If you or someone you know receives a suspicious call, it is essential to verify the authenticity of the caller before taking any action.

The police are currently investigating this case and encourage anyone with information to come forward. The safety and wellbeing of our community members is of utmost importance, and we must all work together to protect each other from such criminal activities.
