In a significant development, a study conducted by a research team from Los Angeles has shed light on the long-term effects of COVID-19 in patients who have experienced mild to moderate illness. The findings of this study, which compared five different definitions of Long COVID and analysed patient data from a large study, have been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The survey, which was part of Geneva's CoviCare program from 18 March to 15 May 2020, used semistructured telephone interviews at enrollment and 30 to 45 days, and 7 to 9 months from diagnosis. The survey revealed that 39.0% of the 410 patients who had COVID-19 reported lingering symptoms 7 months after infection.

Common lingering symptoms included fatigue (20.7%), loss of taste or smell (16.8%), shortness of breath (11.7%), and headache (10.0%). The study's authors suggest that patients treated for mild to moderate COVID-19 should be informed about the potential for long-term effects, and physicians should also be aware of other causes of symptoms like fatigue, cognitive and neurologic symptoms, and shortness of breath to avoid misinterpretation.

The study's findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring for lingering symptoms in patients who have recovered from COVID-19. Media contacts for the study can be reached at [email protected] for further information and clarification.
