Latvia Elected to United Nations Security Council for 2026-2027 Term

Latvia has been elected to serve on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term beginning in 2026, marking a historic moment for the country. The vote, which came as no surprise, saw Latvia as the only country from the Eastern European group of countries to be elected to the UNSC in 2026-2027.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa declared the day a historic one for Latvia, while President Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed a commitment to working for a peaceful, rules-based international order and sustainable development globally. Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže echoed the sentiment, adding that they are honored by the trust placed in them and ready to take on the responsibility to defend the rules-based international order.

The UNSC consists of 15 members at any given time, with five permanent members and ten elected members for a two-year period. The five permanent members are France, China, the Russian Federation (formerly the Soviet Union), the United Kingdom, and the United States, all of which hold the right to veto. The other ten members are elected for a two-year period, with five members being elected each year on an ongoing basis.

This will be the first time Latvia has taken a seat at the UNSC, joining countries such as Switzerland (2023-2024 term) and Germany, which is expected to hold a seat in 2027/28. This suggests that Latvia will be a relevant player in the council dynamics around the time it serves in 2026-2027.

Many countries offered their congratulations to Latvia on its election to the UNSC. The video recording of the UNSC election process, including the announcement of the ballot and results, is available for viewing. The video may contain sections unrelated to the UNSC election, such as World Horse Day and other UN business.

The UNSC was established after World War II, with the five permanent members being France, China, the Soviet Union (now the Russian Federation), the United Kingdom, and the United States. The council was created to maintain international peace and security, to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and to adopt binding resolutions to that end.

With Latvia now a member of the UNSC, the country is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of global security and development.
