The 2024-25 U Sports football season is set to begin on August 22, marking the start of an exciting journey for teams across Canada. One of the notable contenders is Taylor Elgersma, the 2024-25 Lois and Doug Mitchell Award winner, who is chasing his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback with the Green Bay Packers.

This weekend, three of the four conferences - AUS, RSEQ, and OUA - will kick off their seasons. McMaster will face York at 1 pm ET on OUA.tv on Saturday, while Ottawa will take on Waterloo at the same time. Western will square off against Queen's, and Bishop's will meet Mount Allison, both games to be streamed on their respective platforms.

The Canada West conference will start play next week.

The reigning champions of Canadian university football, the Laval Rouge et Or, will be defending their title, with Laurier, Bishop’s, and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks being among the top contenders. According to the U Sports 2025 ELO rankings, the Team not listed in the top 10 is the Manitoba Bisons, who are ranked eighth, while the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks are second, Bishop’s Gaiters fifth, and Laval Rouge et Or first.

The 60th Vanier Cup, the national championship game, will be held on November 22 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, marking the first time the event is staged in the city. U SPORTS CEO Pierre Arsenault stated that the 60th Vanier Cup is a milestone for the sport.

In addition to the on-field action, the impact of U Sports alumni in the Canadian Football League is significant. More than 200 U Sports alumni are currently playing in the CFL.

The Acadia Axemen will start their season with a game against the Saint Mary's Huskies, the first game of the season. The game between Acadia and Saint Mary's will take place at 6 pm ET on AUStv. Meanwhile, Laurier will face Guelph at 6 pm ET on OUA.tv, and the game between Sherbrooke and McGill will take place at 7 pm ET on McGill Sports.

Toronto will take on Carleton at 4 pm ET on OUA.tv on Saturday, and Concordia will play Montréal at 2 pm ET on TVA Sports on the same day.
