Layoffs in Logistics: 1,967 Positions Eliminated in California, Georgia, Michigan

In a troubling turn of events, the logistics and supply chain sectors in Georgia have been hit hard in the past week. The industry is experiencing a wave of job cuts and facility closures, aligning with a broader trend of consolidation seen across the sectors nationwide.

The state of Georgia is not standing idle in the face of these challenges. In a positive development, the state is collaborating on supply chain and logistics management degree programs among its colleges, aiming to equip the future workforce with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving industry landscape.

One of the most significant job losses has been announced by Hormel Foods, who are ending bacon production at their Tucker, Georgia plant, resulting in 135 job losses. Similarly, Silgan Containers has announced 150 temporary layoffs at their Modesto facilities, and J.B. Hunt is closing a Home Depot distribution center in Lithonia, eliminating 70 positions.

International Paper has also made significant cuts, eliminating 1,093 positions in Georgia, closing its Savannah and Riceboro containerboard mills. Meanwhile, API Logistics Warehouse Management Services will cut 118 jobs in Lithia Springs after losing a major client.

On a more positive note, Amazon delivery service provider Web to Door has announced 192 layoffs across three California locations. However, no publicly available information or credible reports indicate which companies in Georgia, besides International Paper, cut jobs during the last weekend of 2025.

The logistics and supply chain sectors have seen a total of 1,967 job cuts in the past week. Despite these challenges, the state of Georgia and its educational institutions are working together to ensure a skilled workforce ready to face the future.

In other news, a course titled "Introduction to International Logistics & Trade Compliance" is available in the archives, and a Supply Chain Summit is scheduled to take place in Atlanta. These events underscore the importance of continued education and collaboration in the face of industry changes.

As always, stay informed and stay safe.
