Learning and cultural exchange center, Kim-Speech Cafe, in operation
The KIM Language Café, situated in the heart of Lünen at Mitmach.RAUM (Marktstraße 2a), has become a cherished gathering spot for language enthusiasts every Wednesday from 4:30 PM to 6 PM. Organised by Hares Kohestani, a Germanist and employee of the Municipal Integration Management, the Language Café offers a unique and supportive environment for individuals waiting for a language course or seeking to consolidate their current knowledge.
Since its inception in February 2025, the Language Café has been a beacon for language learners, providing a low-pressure environment to improve their skills. One participant praises the Language Café for its welcoming atmosphere, stating that it offers an ideal setting for language practice and skill development.
The Language Café addresses a variety of topics, from everyday conversations and grammar questions to integration-specific content such as life in Germany or political structures. Kohestani, the organiser, emphasises the importance of social interaction in language acquisition, quoting the philosopher Xunzi who said, "Learning is like rowing against the current. Once you stop, you drift back."
The Language Café is not just about language learning; it's also about fostering cultural exchange. The children of Language Café participants often demonstrate impressive language skills, reflecting the ripple effect of the learning environment.
The Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Integration Fund provide funds for the operation of German course cafés in cities including Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, and Essen. These funds enable the Language Café to offer support for questions about daily life and bureaucracy, making it an invaluable resource for many.
A mother of two children has gained confidence in speaking German at the Language Café, while a regular group of participants has formed, with two members having obtained an A2 language certificate from different providers. The flexible nature of the Language Café, with no fixed curriculum, allows it to respond effectively to participants' needs.
The Municipal Integration Management, which has a close connection to the Language Café, is funded by the MKJFGFI of North Rhine-Westphalia and the AMIF of the European Union. The Language Café provides a protected environment for practicing German and promoting everyday exchange, making it an essential part of the Lünen community.
