Leclerc's predecessor, Ferrari's Verstappen, establishes a fresh Formula One milestone.
The Italian Grand Prix, the 16th stage of the current royal car racing season, took place in Monza, Italy. The qualifying session was filled with excitement as several records were broken and contenders vied for pole position.
Despite not securing pole position himself, reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen made history by breaking Lewis Hamilton's previous record for the fastest lap average speed in Formula 1. Verstappen's new record stands at an impressive 264.682 km/h, surpassing Hamilton's previous mark of 264.362 km/h set in 2020.
However, it was not Verstappen who broke his own record. That honour went to another driver, whose identity has not been disclosed. Verstappen's previous record was set during a qualifying session in Monza in 2025.
In the battle for pole position, it was Lando Norris of McLaren who came second, with a time of 1 minute 18.878 seconds. Oscar Piastri, also of McLaren, claimed third place.
Despite breaking the speed record, Verstappen did not secure pole position for the Italian Grand Prix in this qualifying session. The pole position went to another driver, whose identity has not been disclosed.
In the drivers' standings, Max Verstappen is currently third, over 100 points behind leader Oscar Piastri. Verstappen has only won two races in the current Formula 1 season - in Japan and Emilia-Romagna.
The Italian Grand Prix will take place tomorrow, September 7. The race promises to be an exciting one, with the drivers vying for points and positions, and the possibility of more records being broken.
