Lee Westwood rehires Billy Foster in an attempt to counter LIV Golf's potential demotion threat.
Lee Westwood has announced a return to his successful partnership with caddie Billy Foster for the final two individual events of the LIV Golf season. The duo, who had a successful run between 2009-2018, will compete in the upcoming LIV Golf events in Chicago and Indianapolis.
During their partnership, Westwood rose to World No.1 in the Official World Golf Ranking and won 13 times, with eight top-three finishes in Major tournaments. Foster's return comes after a brief hiatus, during which he caddied for Collin Morikawa at the Genesis Scottish Open and the Open Championship.
The pressure is on all LIV Golf players to avoid relegation, as players finishing 49th and lower in the 2025 LIV Golf points standings face relegation and losing their spots in the 2026 season. Westwood currently finds himself down in 46th place, but with Foster's experienced guidance, he hopes to climb the rankings.
Notably, the rules for relegation in LIV Golf were tweaked during the 2024 season, with enhanced and enforced relegation now key. This means that even team captains, such as Henrik Stenson (47th), Ian Poulter (51st), and Bubba Watson (who finished in the drop zone last year), are at risk of relegation. Captain exemptions have been removed, leaving no room for leniency.
Foster's return also marks his first caddying appearances in LIV Golf. Westwood's wife, Helen Storey, usually handles caddying duties, but with the stakes high, Westwood has opted for the expertise of his long-time partner.
Westwood and Foster's reunion was announced on social media by The Majesticks, Westwood's team. Foster expressed his excitement for the reunion, writing on Instagram, "Great to be back with the old dawg for a couple of weeks."
It remains to be seen whether this reunion will be enough to secure Westwood's spot in the 2026 LIV Golf season. With no safety net indicated for this year, as was the case for Bubba Watson last year, all players will need to perform at their best to avoid relegation.
