Giorgio Armani, Iconic Italian Fashion Designer, Passes Away at 91
Giorgio Armani, the renowned Italian fashion designer, has passed away at the age of 91. Armani, who was born in Piacenza, Italy, and later moved to Milan, left an indelible mark on the fashion industry with his minimalist and timeless designs.
Armani's career in fashion began in the 1960s, where he started as a window dresser and buyer for the Italian department store chain La Rinascente. His big break came when he presented his own designs at the company of Italian master Nino Cerruti.
Armani's designs were a breath of fresh air in the fashion world. He is credited with reinventing the men's jacket by making suit fabrics softer, more flowing, and more relaxed in the 1980s. Armani also allowed the T-shirt to be worn with a suit, marking a second revolution in men's fashion.
Throughout his career, Armani dressed Hollywood stars in elegant one-of-a-kind creations and sold perfume and jeans in large quantities in his stores. His designs were not only fashionable but also accessible, making him a beloved figure in the fashion industry.
Despite his success, Armani had no formal education or degree in the fashion industry. He declined to take his corporation public and turned down all takeover offers, choosing to maintain control over his brand.
Armani's company, Giorgio Armani SpA, was founded in 1975 with Sergio Galeotti. After Galeotti's early death in 1985, Armani has been the sole CEO of the company. Giorgio Armani SpA employs around 8,700 people, has over 2,000 stores, and numerous factories worldwide.
In a show of respect for Armani, Milan's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, has declared a day of mourning in the city for Monday. Armani's coffin will be on display at his fashion house in Milan starting Saturday, and the funeral ceremony will be held in private at his request.
Politicians and fashion designers have paid tribute to Armani. Giorgia Meloni, a politician, spoke of Armani's contributions to Italian fashion, stating that he brought glory to Italian fashion and inspired the whole world. Anna Wintour, former Vogue editor-in-chief, praised Armani's work, stating that his personality and vision were so clear that his work was immediately recognizable.
Valentino Garavani, behind the Valentino brand, also mourned Armani, considering him a friend and never a rival. Fashion designer Donatella Versace expressed her grief over Armani's death, calling him a "giant" who wrote history.
Leo Dell'Orco, along with Armani's nieces Silvana and Roberta, his sister Rosanna, and her son Andrea Camerana, are expected to succeed Giorgio Armani at Giorgio Armani SpA in a gradual and organic transition.
Armani's estimated fortune is over eleven billion euros, making him appear on the "Forbes" list of the world's richest people. His legacy will continue to influence the fashion industry for years to come.
