Legislation Regarding Tyre Age Limitations

In Germany and across the European Union, the age of car tires is not explicitly regulated, but safety concerns necessitate careful consideration. While there is no legal age limit for tires, it is strongly recommended to replace tires that are more than ten years old for the sake of safety.

Tires up to three years old can be sold as "brand new", and up to five years old as "new". However, the ADAC, a prominent automotive association, advises a maximum age of two years when purchasing tires. This recommendation is based on the results of the ADAC's tests on the danger of driving with worn-out tires.

The age of tires can be determined by the DOT number stamped on the sidewall. The last four digits of this number indicate the tire's week and year of manufacture. By knowing the production date, drivers can keep track of their tires' age and make informed decisions about their replacement.

The condition of tires should be assessed before the main inspection (MOT) of the car. During this inspection, tread depth below 1.6 mm, visible damage, a non-functional tire pressure monitoring system, and very old tires (for trailers with a 100 km/h approval) are considered serious defects.

It's important to note that in case of endangerment or an accident, the fine for driving with worn-out tires increases to 75 or 90 euros (as of September 2025). If caught with worn-out tires, a fine of at least 60 euros and one point in Flensburg (a German city known for its strict traffic law enforcement) may be imposed.

In conclusion, while there is no specific legal age limit for tires, the importance of tire safety cannot be overstated. By following the ADAC's recommendations and regularly checking the age and condition of your tires, you can ensure a safer driving experience for yourself and others on the road.
