In a surprising turn of events, convicted far-right extremist Marla-Svenja Liebich has failed to appear at Chemnitz Women's Prison to serve her sentence. This development has reignited the debate about the new Self-Determination Act, a law that simplifies changes to the gender entry and first name, which came into effect in November 2024.

Liebich, who was sentenced in July 2023 to a total of 18 months in prison without probation for incitement of the people, defamation, and insult, had announced her intention to begin serving her sentence on Friday evening at 10 pm. However, an international arrest warrant has been issued due to her failure to present herself.

The protest and police operation outside the prison in Chemnitz were ended after an audio file was played, allegedly from the person who was supposed to serve their sentence today. The speaker in the audio file claimed to have fled to a third country due to feeling "unbearable."

The splinter party "Free Saxony" had registered the gathering in front of the prison, with at least 60 people present. The case has been a topic of discussion on various platforms, including one where Liebich had made her announcement about serving her sentence. In an evening post on this platform, a statement was made under her name, stating that she had made a decision to change her gender and that no one, including her lawyer or family, knew about it.

Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) accused Liebich of misusing the new regulations and called for changes to the law. He made his statement to the news portal "ZDFheute.de." The right-wing extremist's actions have fueled public debate and led to demands from prominent representatives of the Union party for reform of the law.

It is unclear at this time what measures are being taken to locate Liebich. No details about the search measures have been provided due to operational reasons. Liebich had also announced availability for interviews before serving her sentence.

The Self-Determination Act, which has been a subject of controversy, has simplified changes to the gender entry and first name. Its implementation has been a significant point of discussion in the ongoing debate about Liebich's case.
