Liebich remains at large, unaided by law enforcement.
In a series of unexpected events, Marla-Svenja Liebich, a convicted far-right extremist, failed to report to Chemnitz Women's Prison to begin her 18-month sentence on a specified date. This development has led to a flurry of reactions, protests, and debates, particularly surrounding the new Self-Determination Act.
On the day Liebich was supposed to begin her sentence, a protest rally was held outside Chemnitz Women's Prison. The splinter party "Free Saxony" had registered the gathering. According to police, at least 60 people were present at the rally.
The controversy deepened when an audio file was played during the protest rally, though the content of the audio file was not specified. The person who was supposed to begin their sentence at Chemnitz Women's Prison stated that they felt unwell and had left for a third country.
The case of Liebich has reignited the debate over the new Self-Determination Act, which came into force in November 2024. This legislation significantly simplified changes to the gender entry and first name. Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has accused Liebich of abusing the new regulations, calling for changes to the law. He stated that the change of gender seems to be a clear case of abuse in the context of the Liebich case.
Liebich, who was known as Sven Liebich at the time of sentencing in July 2023, was convicted for incitement of the people, defamation, and insult. In an evening post on platform X, a statement was made, supposedly from Liebich, announcing an international arrest warrant. However, no details on the search measures for Liebich were provided due to operational reasons by Chief Prosecutor Dennis Cernota.
In a move that further complicated the situation, Liebich had announced on a platform X that she would begin her sentence on Friday evening at 10 pm and would be available for interviews beforehand. However, these plans did not materialise, leading to the warrant for Liebich's arrest.
The whereabouts of Liebich remain uncertain, with speculation suggesting that she may be in Russia. However, authorities have not confirmed her exact location. The police operation and the rally were ended following the announcement from the person.
Dobrindt made his comments about the case to the news portal "ZDFheute.de". The debate over the new Self-Determination Act is ongoing, with many questioning its implications in cases such as Liebich's.
