Life-size statue of cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar, often referred to as the "Little Master," unveiled at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium
On a momentous day at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled a life-size statue of Sunil Gavaskar, one of India's greatest cricketers. The unveiling took place during the inauguration of the Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum.
Gavaskar, who made his Test debut in 1971, is regarded as one of the greatest opening batters of all time. He scored 10,000 runs in Tests, becoming the first player in the sport's history to achieve this feat, against Pakistan in 1987 in Ahmedabad.
The statue, which stands proudly at the museum's grand entrance, showcases Gavaskar in his iconic batting stance. Visitors can also find a life-size statue of Sharad Pawar, the former president of the International Cricket Council and a former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Gavaskar expressed his gratitude for the honour, stating that the museum's creation by MCA is a commendable way of showcasing India's rich cricketing heritage. He further added that the digital presentation at the museum allows for recreation and presentation of cricket from before the television era.
The museum is not just a collection of memorabilia, but a journey through India's cricketing history. It houses Gavaskar's jersey from the 1976 Lord's Test against England, as well as Rohit Sharma's bat and jersey from the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Gavaskar's game was modelled on pitch-perfect defence. His battles on the field were legendary, with mouth-watering encounters against cricketing greats like Richie Benaud, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, and Ian Botham. He led India to a victory in the 1985 World Championship of Cricket against Pakistan.
Gavaskar was also part of India's iconic 1983 World Cup triumph. He battled against the famous West Indies pace quartet, showcasing his resilience and determination.
In his speech, Gavaskar expressed that the Sharad Pawar Museum at Wankhede Stadium will help future generations connect with and learn from cricket's glorious past. He believes that the museum will inspire young cricketers and fans alike, fostering a love for the game that has captivated the nation for decades.
The unveiling of the statue marks a significant milestone in Gavaskar's illustrious career. It serves as a testament to his contributions to Indian cricket and his enduring impact on the sport. The museum, with its priceless collection of cricket memorabilia, promises to be a must-visit destination for cricket enthusiasts.
