Lifeblood Lux: Initial Phase Accomplished Ahead of Schedule in 2026

The Lifeline Lux project, a significant undertaking in Cologne, is progressing steadily, with various phases currently underway. The completion dates for the individual phases of this project, which includes the installation of free connections for district heating and fiber optic, are not affected by these additions.

The project's primary aim is to make Luxembourg Street more attractive and livable, with a focus on creating a traffic-calmed zone between Bonn Street in the south and Horbeller Street in the north. The second phase, from Horbeller Street to Luxembourg Street 315, is already underway, and construction is progressing rapidly.

Meanwhile, the second section, from house number 315 to the AOK Street, will have canal and roadway construction completed by July 2025. By June 2025, the plan is to have all main supply lines laid and the roadway renewed. Ancillary facilities such as sidewalks, garden cabins, new power, water lines, fiber optic cables, and house connections will be built by February 2026.

The third phase of construction, from Horbeller Street to AOK Street, is scheduled to be completed in September 2025. The project is expected to be completed and reopened to traffic in early 2027.

The Lifeline Lux project receives funding from several sources. The Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development, and Building, as well as the NRW State Ministry for Home Affairs, Local Government, Building, and Digitalization, contribute a combined total of 7,971,413 euros. Additionally, the Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, and Transport of the state of NRW and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, along with the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM), also provide funding. The project also receives 171,600 euros for the planned cycle street from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM).

Residents can apply for free connections for district heating at 02233 / 53-600 or fernwaermevertrieb. For fiber optic connections, they can contact NetCologne at 0221 / 2222 5544 or glasfaser.

The project bearers for the federal special program "City and Country" and the Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, and Transport of the state of NRW are the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM).

The Lifeline Lux project is set to transform Luxembourg Street, making it a more attractive and livable space for the community. With its focus on traffic calming, greenery, and modern infrastructure, this project is a significant step towards improving the urban landscape of Cologne.
