In the heart of Lisbon, Portugal, a devastating accident occurred on Wednesday, involving the iconic Elevador da Glória. The cable car derailed after a cable snapped, resulting in a tragic incident that has left 15 people dead and 18 injured.

The accident has received significant international coverage, with renowned news outlets such as The New York Times, BBC, Le Monde, and Bild reporting on the incident. The French newspaper Le Monde reported that the carriage of the famous elevator overturned due to the accident.

Portugal has declared a day of mourning for the 15 people who lost their lives in the tragedy. The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera anticipates that there may be an Italian among the injured. Two of the injured are confirmed to be Spanish citizens.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway. The Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aviation and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) has been conducting the investigation, with the initial findings set to be released on September 6, 2025. It is important to note that this is not the first accident reported on the Elevador da Glória. The Spanish newspaper El País highlighted this fact. Another incident occurred on May 7, 2018, due to a failure in the maintenance services of the funicular, although the incident was resolved without victims.

The Portuguese justice has announced the opening of an investigation following the accident. O Globo and Folha de São Paulo report that the accident, caused by a cable breakage, left 15 dead with no Brazilian victims. La Stampa notes that there are 15 dead in the Lisbon cable car accident.
