Live-action adaptation of Disney's classic animated film Aladdin packs a punch with vibrant energy and exciting twists
In 2015, Disney announced that it would be reviving the beloved tale of Aladdin as a live-action movie. Guy Ritchie, known for his signature fast-paced, gritty, and visceral action films, was chosen to direct the project.
Ritchie found the idea of directing a musical appealing, especially since his house was full of Disney at the time, thanks to his five kids. Producer Jonathan Eirich initially shared the idea of bringing Aladdin to life as a live-action movie with Dan Lin, who agreed that there was a unique opportunity to update the original 1992 film.
John August was brought on to write the screenplay for the live-action Aladdin. August, with his extensive screenwriting credits including Go, Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie's Angels, and Big Fish, was the perfect choice to pen a more modern retelling of the story.
Ritchie saw Aladdin as a clash between two worlds: a street kid in a Disney environment. He aimed to keep the original tone of the first Aladdin while making it feel fresh. The original screenplay was adapted by August, and Alan Menken provided the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs and new music.
The cast for the live-action Aladdin features Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Will Smith as the Genie. According to Dan Lin, the film is a visual spectacle on the big screen, featuring a breathtaking and visually-stunning world.
Ritchie's visual panache and contemporary sensibility are perfectly suited to Aladdin. Despite never having helmed a musical prior to this project, his films are heavily influenced by music. The director's love for the original story and his unique filmmaking style promise an exciting new take on the timeless tale of Aladdin.
