Living my lifelong dream at last, working on a cruise ship at the age of 43, allowing me to traverse the globe now.
Janine Santos, a native of Cardiff, Wales, had always harboured a dream of working on a cruise ship. This dream was ignited when she saw a job advertisement in a local newspaper as a teen. However, her dreams of setting sail were put on hold when she had a son at the age of 20.
Years later, Janine enrolled in a hair and beauty course, but quickly realised it wasn't her calling. Determined to pursue her dream, she continued to seek opportunities in the maritime industry. Her persistence paid off when a recruiter offered her a retail manager position on a cruise ship a few months later.
Janine's career change has been a transformative journey. She has spent time in dream locations such as Bora-Bora, Tahiti, Australia, and Costa Rica, and has held a koala in Australia and spotted sloths in Costa Rica. Her adventures continued when she set sail from Southampton, England in May 2022.
Janine has been working on cruise ships for three years, and her hard work and dedication have been rewarded. She was promoted to fleet manager, managing 12 ships. Her son, Keanau, has been supportive of her decision to continue working on cruise ships.
However, Janine's journey has not been without its challenges. In July 2021, her father, Robert, died suddenly from lung cancer, aged 66. This loss was a difficult time for Janine, but it has not deterred her from her passion for travel and work at sea.
Now, Janine spends a few days working on land in the UK between six-month stints at sea. Despite the long periods away from home, she cherishes the opportunities her career has provided her. Janine and her husband, Damon, recently celebrated her 40th birthday sailing around the Caribbean.
Janine's career change has opened her mindset and reminded her of the beauty of the world. She encourages others to pursue their dreams, no matter how far-fetched they may seem. As she continues to travel and work on cruise ships, Janine is living proof that dreams can become a reality.
