Local Democrats in the Bronx rally in support of candidate Zohran
In the bustling heart of the Bronx, Zohran Mamdani held a rally at Lou Gehrig Plaza, urging party leaders to endorse him as the Democratic mayoral nominee. The event was marked by the presence of several Bronx elected officials, including the Bronx Democratic Party, Sen. Jamaal Bailey, and City Council Member Oswald Feliz, who endorsed Mamdani for the first time.
Mamdani, a progressive insurgent, has been seeking to broaden his political tent over the past two months. He has been distancing himself from aspects of the far-left platform of the Democratic Socialists of America, aiming to appeal to a wider audience. This strategy seems to be paying off, as he has received endorsements from leaders across the political spectrum, including former Mayor Eric Adams, Rep. Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, and former Mayor Bill de Blasio.
However, the path to victory is not without challenges. Mamdani lost handily in the Bronx during the Democratic primary, with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo winning more than 53% of the votes there. Cuomo, who has few backers in the general election, was notably absent from the rally.
A scheduling conflict prevented Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson from attending the rally, and it was unclear if she had endorsed Mamdani. Gibson's absence was felt, as her endorsement could have provided a significant boost to Mamdani's campaign.
Conversations are ongoing between Mamdani and the three leaders: Gov. Kathy Hochul, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. However, Hakeem Jeffries, along with other party establishment figures, has withheld support from Mamdani. This divide within the Democratic Party between centrists and progressives is becoming increasingly apparent.
Attorney General Letitia James, who has been actively supporting Mamdani for months, urged the party to unite and stand with Mamdani to address challenges from Washington D.C. James has likened Mamdani to former President Barack Obama multiple times, suggesting that he could bring a similar level of hope and change to New York City.
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams spoke at the rally, urging the party to support Mamdani, who inspired a substantial number of first-time voters to turn out. Mamdani declined to comment specifically on a message for Gov. Kathy Hochul, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, or Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Instead, he expressed excitement about expanding his coalition.
The rally was used as a platform for speakers to urge other elected officials to support Mamdani. Despite the challenges, Mamdani's determination and growing support base indicate that he is a force to be reckoned with in the New York mayoral race.
