Local government strategies for heating systems management
In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Augsburg has taken significant strides towards a sustainable future with the publication of its Energy Use Plan (ENP) for the city area. This comprehensive plan, divided into two sections – ENP Heat and ENP Electricity – offers valuable insights into the current and future energy landscape of the city.
The ENP Heat, in particular, provides a detailed analysis of the heat demand in the city, based on factors such as building size, age, and specific consumption values. Plan 1, a key component of the ENP Heat, illustrates this demand in megawatt-hours per year. However, it's important to note that this plan does not account for general renovations and new constructions since 2009, nor does it consider resident consumption behavior.
Plan 3 serves as a rough guide to the sensible use of energy across the Augsburg city area. Meanwhile, Plan 2 offers a visual representation of existing generation facilities within the city, albeit without heat pump performance data, private combined heat and power plants, or biomass plants. It's worth mentioning that Plan 2 does not display the annually produced energy, only the installed capacity.
The heat network expansion plan, detailed by Stadtwerke Augsburg, remains a crucial point of contact for determining whether a building can be connected to a heat network in the foreseeable future. This plan, updated annually, details existing and planned heat network areas, types, and expected commissioning years. The heat network expansion plan available at the end of 2023 was checked and largely adopted for the ENP Heat.
Heat networks play a pivotal role in Augsburg's ambition to achieve a climate-neutral heat supply for the entire city area by 2040. In fact, some city districts such as Göggingen, Kriegshaber, and the Inner City could potentially be connected to a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) network in the near future.
The Environmental Department/Office is leading the cartographic representation of the ENP Heat, ensuring a clear and accurate visual representation of the city's energy transition. Furthermore, the Environmental Office offers lectures and thematic evenings on topics related to the energy and heat transition, providing opportunities for citizens to engage and learn more about these vital changes.
As Augsburg continues to move towards a sustainable future, the ENP serves as a beacon of hope, offering a roadmap towards a climate-neutral heat supply and a greener city for all its residents.
