Local residents in Rust area are growing resistant towards the influx of larger holiday homes.
In the heart of Ortenaukreis, the picturesque town of Rust is facing a transformation. A group of concerned locals, led by Gerhard Link, have banded together to form the citizen initiative "Dorf statt Ferienanlage – Unser Rust soll lebenswert bleiben." This initiative aims to preserve the village character and living quality of Rust, opposing excessive vacation home development and soil sealing.
Link, one of the initiators, emphasises the need to stand up against mass tourism in Rust. The town has seen an increase in holiday apartments due to the nearby Europapark, a popular tourist destination. However, the revenue generated by guests of the Europapark is reportedly higher than the revenue from renting apartments permanently to locals.
The concerns of local residents about the town's development have led to the formation of this citizens' initiative. The initiative claims that the quality of life in Rust is deteriorating due to increased noise, traffic, waste, water, and energy consumption. Moreover, the social fabric of Rust is reportedly suffering, according to the initiative.
In an effort to raise awareness and mobilise the town's population, the citizens' initiative has printed a brochure. The slogan of the initiative, "Village instead of holiday resort," encapsulates their mission to preserve Rust's character as a village, not a holiday resort.
Large houses with holiday apartments are being planned in Rust, which the initiative is working to prevent. The founding of the citizens' initiative has received a significant response on social media, indicating a strong desire among locals to protect their town's unique charm.
